Malcolm X in Mecca and His Conversion to True Islam

Malcolm X in Mecca and His Conversion to True Islam On April 13, 1964, Malcolm X left the United States on a personal and spiritual journey through the Middle East and West Africa. By the time he returned on May 21, he’d visited Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, and Algeria. In Saudi Arabia, he’d experienced what amounted to his second life-changing epiphany as he accomplished the Hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, and discovered an authentic Islam of universal respect and brotherhood. The experience changed Malcolm’s worldview. Gone was the belief in whites as exclusively evil. Gone was the call for black separatism. His voyage to Mecca helped him discover the atoning power of Islam as a means to unity as well as self-respect: â€Å"In my thirty-nine years on this earth,† he would write in his autobiography, â€Å"the Holy City of Mecca had been the first time I had ever stood before the Creator of All and felt like a complete human being.† It had been a long journey in a brief life. Before Mecca: The Nation of Islam Malcolm’s first epiphany occurred 12 years earlier when he converted to Islam while serving an eight-to-10-year prison sentence for robbery. But back then it was Islam according to Elijah Muhammad’s Nation of Islam- an odd cult whose principles of racial hatred and separatism, and whose strange beliefs about whites being a genetically engineered race of â€Å"devils,† stood it in contrast with Islam’s more orthodox teachings. Malcolm X bought in and rapidly rose in the ranks of the organization, which was more like a neighborhood guild, albeit a disciplined and enthusiastic one, than a â€Å"nation† when Malcolm arrived. Malcolm’s charisma and eventual celebrity built the Nation of Islam into the mass movement and political force it became in the early 1960s. Disillusion and Independence The Nation of Islam’s Elijah Muhammad turned out to be much less than the upstanding moral paragon he pretended to be. He was a hypocritical, serial womanizer who fathered numerous children out of wedlock with his secretaries, a jealous man who resented Malcolm’s stardom, and a violent man who never hesitated to silence or intimidate his critics (through thuggish emissaries). His knowledge of Islam was also relatively slight. â€Å"Imagine, being a Muslim minister, a leader in Elijah Muhammad’s Nation of Islam,† Malcolm wrote, â€Å"and not knowing the prayer ritual.† Elijah Muhammad had never taught it. It took Malcolm’s disillusionment with Muhammad and the Nation finally to break away from the organization and set out on his own, literally and metaphorically, to the authentic heart of Islam. Rediscovering Brotherhood and Equality First in Cairo, the Egyptian capital, then in Jeddah, the Saudi city, Malcolm witnessed what he claims he never saw in the United States: men of all color and nationalities treating each other equally. â€Å"Throngs of people, obviously Muslims from everywhere, bound for the pilgrimage,† he’d begun to notice at the airport terminal before boarding the plane for Cairo in Frankfurt, â€Å"were hugging and embracing. They were of all complexions, the whole atmosphere was of warmth and friendliness. The feeling hit me that there really wasn’t any color problem here. The effect was as though I had just stepped out of a prison.† To enter the state of ihram required of all pilgrims heading for Mecca, Malcolm abandoned his trademark black suit and dark tie for the two-piece white garment pilgrims must drape over their upper and lower bodies. â€Å"Every one of the thousands at the airport, about to leave for Jedda, was dressed this way,† Malcolm wrote. â₠¬Å"You could be a king or a peasant and no one would know.† That, of course, is the point of ihram. As Islam interprets it, it reflects the equality of man before God. Preaching in Saudi Arabia In Saudi Arabia, Malcolm’s journey was held up a few days until authorities could be sure his papers, and his religion, were in order (no non-Muslim is allowed to enter the Grand Mosque in Mecca). As he waited, he learned various Muslim rituals and spoke to men of vastly different backgrounds, most of whom were as star struck with Malcolm as Americans were back home. They knew Malcolm X as the â€Å"Muslim from America.† They plied him with questions; he obliged them with sermons for answers. In everything he said to them, â€Å"they were aware,† in Malcolm’s words, â€Å"of the yardstick that I was using to measure everything- that to me the earth’s most explosive and pernicious evil is racism, the inability of God’s creatures to live as One, especially in the Western world.† Malcolm in Mecca Finally, the actual pilgrimage: â€Å"My vocabulary cannot describe the new mosque [in Mecca] that was being built around the Ka’aba,† he wrote, describing the sacred site as â€Å"a huge black stone house in the middle of the Grand Mosque. It was being circumambulated by thousands upon thousands of praying pilgrims, both sexes, and every size, shape, color, and race in the world. [†¦] My feeling here in the House of God was numbness. My mutawwif (religious guide) led me in the crowd of praying, chanting pilgrims, moving seven times around the Ka’aba. Some were bent and wizened with age; it was a sight that stamped itself on the brain. It was that sight that inspired his famous â€Å"Letters from Abroad†- three letters, one from Saudi Arabia, one from Nigeria and one from Ghana- that began redefining Malcolm X’s philosophy. â€Å"America,† he wrote from Saudi Arabia on April 20, 1964, â€Å"needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases the race problem from its society.† He would later concede that â€Å"the white man is not inherently evil, but America’s racist society influences him to act evilly. A Work in Progress, Cut Down It’s easy to overly romanticize Malcolm’s last period of his life, to misinterpret it as gentler, more amenable to white tastes then (and to some extent still now) so hostile to Malcolm. In reality, he returned to the United States as fiery as ever. His philosophy was taking a new direction. But his critique of liberalism went on unabated. He was willing to take the help of â€Å"sincere whites,† but he was under no illusion that the solution for black Americans would not begin with whites. It would begin and end with blacks. In that regard, whites were better off busying themselves with confronting their own pathological racism. â€Å"Let sincere whites go and teach non-violence to white people,† he said. Malcolm never had the chance to evolve his new philosophy fully. â€Å"I never have felt that I would live to be an old man,† he told Alex Haley, his biographer. On Feb. 21, 1965, at the Audubon Ballroom in Harlem, he was shot by three men as he was preparing to speak to an audience of several hundred. Source X, Malcolm. Pearson Education Essays

Pearson Education Essays Pearson Education Essay Pearson Education Essay The similarities between the two are, that they both have the view that action is important in cognitive development. But where they differ is that Vygotsky believes that instruction is an essential part of learning where Piaget believes that it is more the motivation of the child and less adult participation.  With the ZPD, some situations may inhibit the learning, for e.g., when the teacher asks too many questions or where the child is in a group of dominant peers. In the classroom there is less opportunity for activity in which the teacher can test the individual childs ZPD. Donaldson criticised Piagets claims that the pre-operational child cannot cope with tasks like conservation, because they lack the logical thought processes. She found that the if worded differently, and using equipment or situations that were more relevant to that childs life then the experiments would show different results- results that prove that a pre-operational child was more intelligent than Piaget had previously published. Rose and Blank (1974) and Samuel and Bryant (1984) also carried out experiments that considered the forming of questioning. McGarrigle and Donaldson in 1974 carried out an experiment using a character called Naughty Teddy. This experiment was to show that when an adult asks if something has been altered a child is more likely to say yes, when it is not the case but if naughty teddy was to alter something then the child would usually come up with the correct answer as it was not be influenced by trying to answer what the adult wants it to hear. Other research has found that children develop certain cognitive structures earlier than Piaget claimed. Bower (1981) found that infants 5-6 months old showed surprise when an object that had been hidden behind a screen was no longer there when the screen was lifted. He also demonstrated that babies of eight weeks tracked an object when it moved behind a screen by showing with their eyes where it should emerge. I believe that critics to Piaget and Vygotsky have encouraged more people to examine their theories, however I believe that Donaldson at the time of her publication, blew Piaget out of the water. She argued that children are not at any stage as egocentric as Piaget has claimedchildren are not so limited in ability to reason deductively as Piaget and others have claimed andhis (a childs) language-learning skills are not so isolated from the rest of his mental growth8. Due to theorists such as Donaldson who challenged Piagets theories, Piaget is now looked at as more of a pioneer of his time rather than for his accuracy in his stages of development, however there are Piagetian theorists that follow the main ideas of Piaget, such as Doise and Mugny but they take account of the social context of peer interaction within which the child operates. Vygotsky, like Piaget is appreciated immensely for making huge advancements in the field of cognitive development, theorists like Bruner have included their ideas but moved on to base his own conclusion. I believe that criticisms have affected the standing of their theories, however the majority of present day theorists base their ideas loosely from either Piaget or Vygotsky, so even nearly a hundred years later after Vygotskys writings they are still as relevant today as they were then. What Is the Fate of the South Korean Great Southern Gate Coursework

What Is the Fate of the South Korean Great Southern Gate - Coursework Example On December 20, 1962, the South Korean government exalted the Great Southern Gate to the position of the country’s national treasure number one. The gate is a brilliant example of the ancient architecture of the Yi Dynasty Empire. After its construction, Namdaemun was the tallest building of them all, towering majestically over the smaller buildings and palaces in the city of Seoul. At present, it struggles for prominence dwarfed by the giant skyscrapers in the fast-paced city. Despite the fact that there are four large gates and five minor gates in Seoul, only Namdaemun has been selected as a National Treasure. It was chosen as South Korea's National Treasure number one because, in 1962, when the South Korean government launched the establishment of National Treasures, Namdaemun stood as a sterling paragon of ancient Confucian architecture. Newworldencyclopedia.org further notes that the Great South Gate, magnificent and striking by the time King Sejong reconstructed it in the 1470s, ushered in all Chinese and Japanese dignitaries on their way to visit the King. That is the only gate through which they could enter. Confucianism had blended into the culture of the Korean society well before the Yi Dynasty but later on, it grew in prominence. Namdaemun thus epitomizes both the supreme power of the Korean Empire and the governing place of Confucianism not only in Korean politics but also in their religion and culture.  Ã‚   Seoul, the capital of Korea since the naissance of the Joseon Dynasty circa 1392 C.E. until now, had been a fortified city having nine gates that allowed passage in and out of the city. The founders of the city built four main gates and five minor ones. The four main gates were positioned in the direction of the four cardinal points: North, south, east and west. The south, east and west gates would open at daybreak and shut at the end of the day at the ringing of the city bell. The northern gate remained blocked and was set aside purely to facilitate the king's flight to Pukhan Sansong or more remote buttresses during times of danger. Namdaemun was the "southern gate." Yi T'aejo built all the nine city gates together with the Namdaemun gate during the fourteenth century C.E. The Joseon Dynasty also known as Choson or Chosun was the last ruling dynasty in Korea, reigning from 1392 to 1910 at the start of the Japanese annexation.

Hospitality Operations PowerPoint Presentation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Hospitality Operations - PowerPoint Presentation Example Ingredients’ standardization had three main merits – ensuring minimization of food leftovers among the customers, limited likelihood for customers view of the restaurant as having poor value for money, and maximized profiteering. The three dishes provided a wide range of supplementary choices. For instance, one could serve fried-rice with beef, chicken or vegetables. This provided the customers with a range of options to choose from, giving provision for the vegetarians. The stir-fried noodles served with vegetables had the greatest percentage of profit margin. For a single customers dish, its ingredients were the cheapest to acquire. The dishes had a set of healthy primary ingredients, rich in vitamins and high in nutritional value. For instance, use of garlic and ginger across the ingredients add a delicious taste and nutritional value to dishes. Different blends of milk shakes added flavor to the menu. Besides the flavored tastes, the addition supplemented the dishes with beauty to the menu set-up and perfect blends with the dishes. Moreover, provision for a wide range of drinks also augured well with the menu set up. The customers could opt to pick a drink of their desire from the options. Fried rice is a fast food made by boiling rice then frying on a frying pan together with such ingredients and additives as eggs, jasmine oil, carrots, ginger, garlic, fish sauce and spring onion. Stir-fried noodles are fast foods made by marinating chicken and beef separately before cooking together with vegetable. Mushroom, leeks, carrots, sunflower oil, vinegar and green peppers are the main ingredients. Thai green curry has chicken as the main component of the dish and is cooked specially with such ingredients as fish sauce, green beans, ginger, green pepper, coconut oil and Thai green curry paste. The balance scorecard had five areas: event, objectives, measures, targets and the initiative. The event included specific areas of focus before and during the

Footwear International Essay Example for Free

Footwear International Essay Footwear International is a multinational manufacturer and marketer of footwear with 83 companies in 70 countries with one of these locations is in Bangladesh, where John Carlson is the managing director. Bangladesh has had a turbulent history in the 20th century and over 85% of the population is Moslem (Thomas, 2003). An article in the Meillat, a newspaper with pro Libyan preferences, made reference to the design of the insole of a sandal included the Arabic spelling of the word â€Å"Allah† and since this design was on the insole of the sandal and next to the foot it is a sign of great disrespect to Moslems. The article also stated Footwear International was owned and operated by a Jewish family and was linked in the shootings of people in Palestine by Jews. This incident seemed to be escalating rapidly as youth groups began calling for demonstrations against Footwear, a lawyer had filed charges under the criminal code that forbade deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious believers. To make matters worse the prime minister had voiced his concerns in the matter as well. Public opinion towards Footwear International has now turned negative due to the erroneous claims published in the Melliat. The newspaper had stated that Footwear was under Jewish ownership which is untrue as the family that owned Footwear International was Christian. The design on the insole of the sandal was based on Chinese temple bells that the designer had purchased and was approved by her supervisor who was Moslem (Thomas, 2003). Numerous other people had seen the new logo during the design process and no one had made objections in regards to this logo either. How this logo incensed the Moslem community and more importantly how should Footwear International and especially John Carlson handle the allege claims against the company? It appears that Footwear International has two alternatives: one option is not to do anything and hope the problem will go away or the second option is to address the situation and resolve the conflict. The first option of not doing anything is not a very a good decision to make by Footwear International. The problem will not go away but will continue to grow until Footwear International ceases all operations in Bangladesh and with that the loss of revenue. Timing is the key in the second option and is more complicated as there are several major hurdles that John Carlson must address in a short period of time. It was indicated that two youth groups were planning on demonstrating against Footwear International. The first obstacle Carlson must be concerned with is for the safety of all his employees and their families especially the four other managers that were named in statement. He may wish to seclude the managers and their families in a safe location to protect them from the demonstrators. Carlson might request extra security personal from the corporate headquarters to ensure their safety. Religion and culture are very sensitive subjects to people of any country and due to the fact the opposition newspaper had printed false information about Footwear International, Carlson must use all types of media to set the record straight. Carlson will need to explain that Footwear International is owned and operated by individuals who are Christians and not Jewish as the newspaper article had stated. Carlson must capitalize on the company’s presence in the country that began in the 1930’s, the first manufacturing plant constructed in 1962, in 1971 the managing director was a freedom fighter, in 1985 Footwear International went public and two years later spearheaded the largest private sector foreign investment in the country and employees over 1800 Bangladesh people in 81 stores and agencies (Thomas, 2003). Carlson must be very sincere as he communicates to the different media outlets on how the design used was based on Chinese temple bells and that the designer who created this logo is Muslim as well. I believe Carlson must compare the design logo to the Arabic spelling of Allah and emphasize that the design logo was not intended to offend anyone of the Muslim society. Footwear International must review the procedures they use in the design process and new policies should be implemented going forward so this type of situation will not occur again. It is important for Carlson to admit this mistake and I think he must make a bold move and announces the recall of these sandals, this may be a costly decision, however it will the show the people he is sincere in trying to remedy the problem. Carlson must also be concerned with the legal actions that a local lawyer has filed against him and if by chance the lawyer does not rescind these charges it may be necessary for him to seek legal help from the corporate headquarters. Footwear International executives should use any means available to open up dialogue with the prime minister in hopes of him recanting his remarks. If the prime minister addresses the situation and reissues a statement supporting Footwear International attempts to correct the situation this would probably pressure the lawyer in dropping the charges. If I was in Carlson’s place I would meet this situation head on and utilize all resources at my disposable to correct this honest mistake. Mistakes happen and it is how we fix these mistakes that people judge our integrity by.

Preparing a Website for Sale :: Sell Websites Buy Websites

Preparing a Website for Sale Reprinted with permission of VotanWeb.com A website owner recently asked me to succinctly define what an owner must do in order to prepare a website for sale. I segmented my response into major categories as follows: Financial Since most website sales are based upon a multiple of the cash flow (either EBITDA or Discretionary Cash Flow), the website owner must have all of the financial records segregated and in good order. At a minimum, we would suggest having three years of financial statements and tax returns. If there are substantial differences between taxable income and book income (e.g. cash basis vs. accrual), those must be identified and explained. Culling out all significant discretionary expenditures along with isolating any unusual and non-recurring expenditures and losses will be important. Operations The Seller will want to identify all products and services provided by his (her) website and the specific markets served. In this review, it will be important to define the strategic advantages enjoyed by the website in their respective niche as well as comparative gross profit margins for each product and service. Growth Opportunities While buyers will purchase a website at a price predicated on current and historical cash flows, the main impetus for the purchase will be the ability of the buyer to grow the website at a rate that exceeds the norm for similar opportunities. It is important for the Seller to visualize those growth possibilities and define them tangibly in terms of product extensions to current lines, existing products to new markets, better market penetration, wider geographical distribution and etc. Deal Structure The preponderance of transactions in the sale of privately held website are handled as an asset sale (versus sale of stock). This type of sale will result in the buyer receiving a stepped up basis in the assets purchased (which generates future tax deductions) while concurrently avoiding unwanted contingent liabilities that result from a stock sale. The owner must sit down with his CPA and/or attorney and understand the tax implications of this transaction under each scenario so that he will not be surprised at closing or worse yet, when preparing his individual and corporate tax return. Remember, it's not what you get but what you keep that counts! Available Financing Most website owners would prefer to be cashed out of the transaction at closing and do as little owner financing as possible.

Mouse movement and keyboard skills Essay

This again applied to visual basic; having used it in my standard grade course I could see the potential. Better than UniComal, I could see I could do more with it, it was more user friendly, but just not what I was looking for. 3. Using macromedia Authorware was my ideal choice. Having browsed through the software I was surprised how user friendly it was. Although I could see it was going to take a lot of time to familiarise myself with it. If time had allowed me I would certainly have tried authorware. It had seemed perfect for my application; I could include sound, a scoreboard, links were automatic and its potential was amazing 4. For time allowance and teaching I have decided to go along with this idea. My suggestion is to carry out how I would like my software to go on a Power Point presentation. This will not only allow me to have a prototype of what I initially would have liked my final piece to look like but will also show links and documentation. In Power Point I will be able to use colour, sound and graphics, out of reach in the likes of UniComal and Visual Basic. This makes it more appealing to young users. As I already have an extensive knowledge of Power Point I will only have to refresh this. However, in reference to 1. , Users will have to have access to a multimedia computer. My suggestions to go along with the fourth option are feasible as there is sufficient technology available; it is economically feasible as everything that I need as already assessable. Software Design Opening Page The opening page to my project will be a general introduction. Basically its purpose is to give the links to the activities and also to the parental page. The main characters for the whole project will first appear here. In an ideal word I would have liked for him to speak as well as the words be on the screen as children may not be able to read them. Opening Page Design 1. Show Opening Screen (Time Hold 10 Seconds) 2. Enter choice 2. 1 IF choice = Mouse Movement Open Mouse Movement IF choice = Keyboard Skills Open Keyboard Skills IF choice = Parental Information Open Parental Information END IF END IF END IF Mouse Movement The mouse movement screen will be very colourful. As it is the first activity a good impression must be made to encourage the user to continue using the software. The first screen will be Daffy Duck describing the game and telling the user what to do. This will be on a time hold for ten seconds to allow the user to read the information before automatically progressing forward. This is also beneficial as the whole point in the exercise is to learn how to use the mouse, therefore I don’t wont the user to have to click to enter the page. The following exercise would therefore be pointless if the user already knew how to do this. The screen will only move on if the correct colour is selected. If the wrong colour is selected, a try again screen will appear and a time hold will apply before moving back to the previous screen. If the correct colour is selected then a well-done screen will appear, a time hold and then a progression on to the next colour. Once all the colours have been completed a closing screen will appear. This will have a small picture of the main character and then will automatically go back to the opening page. Mouse Movement Design 1. Show Mouse Movement Screen (Time Hold 10 Seconds) 2. The same process will take place; the screen will only move on if the correct word is typed. If the wrong word is typed, a try again screen will appear and a time hold will apply before moving back to the previous screen. If the correct word is typed then a well-done screen will appear, a time hold and then a progression on to the next word. Once all the words have been completed a closing screen will appear. This will have a small picture of the main character and then will automatically go back to the opening page. Keyboard Skills Design 1. Show Keyboard Skills Page (Time Hold 10 Seconds) 2. Screen Demonstrations Mouse Movement opening page Mouse Movement (Yellow) Implementing and Testing Some time was spent at the beginning of the new school year looking into the project, since then, up until now this is it just being started. With only two teaching periods a week at was difficult to get the project off the ground. Initially I had plans to use Macromedia Authorware to carry out my project, but since I have been left with a mere two weeks to complete all the project and write up I have decided that a prototype presentation on Microsoft Power Point would basically â€Å"have to do†. Implementing Implementation of the solution started in mid April. Due to the time deflect shortcuts were taken to enable me to complete the project. Implementation was fairly straight forward as it merely consisted of creating the designed pages on the screen. I had big plans, and am gutted at having to reduce these for my final piece. I have a great imagination and love experimenting to see what looks and works best. I had already drawn out all my page layouts. I then basically had to enter this into the computer. I changed my design slightly and decided to have an opening page for every separate activity. I went through each activity systematically inserting slide after slide. After one activity’s slides were all designed on the computer I had to put all the links into the slides. These take the form of â€Å"Action Settings† and are available through right clicking on the object that you wish the link to go from. Sound was then recorded too using a computer microphone. This again was inserted using the action settings. The characters and pictures that appear on the screen were all uplifted from the Internet, and copy and pasted on to my presentation. All images were found from www. google. com in the image section. Link from the home page to each separate activity is going to be done through separate presentations that will be linked together. This will save confusion over one large single presentation. Once all the pages were entered and suitable images entered, sound recorded and links on; it was time to check if everything was running smoothly. Having checked the run of the presentation a few times I could see that this was indeed going to be the most difficult part of the project. As with everything nothing ever does run perfectly. My links were dysfunctional. When Well Done was displayed, instead of continuing to the next screen my presentation was jumping to Try Again then indeed stopping running at all. Due to the nature of the software, no test data as such was employed. However a dry run-through is needed from different circumstances and answers. EG correct answer chosen, wrong answer chosen, to ensure that I had fixed the presentation from wandering through unnecessary slides. Problems Encountered I have been lucky that I have not hit many major problems and although the presentation is far from finished I can see that it is a matter of following the routine I have been doing, testing as I go along so as not to have progressive mistakes. My main problem as you can tell has been time. Everything has been rather rushed. I had great plans at the beginning and was not prepared to concentrate on one area only but to try hard to do everything. This has been a disaster. For the time it has taken to write the report has left me nearly no time to neither concentrate on the actual presentation nor study for the exam. As I worked with Power Point it is fairly idiot proof any mistakes I made were easy to fix. My links will work with a little time and effort. Testing Once all link testing is complete I will a variety of users to try the software. These will include experienced computer users, older beginner users and also two five year olds (relatives). This will allow me to see how different people react to the software. Paying more attention to the five year olds I shall ask them to undertake the tasks above (1-3), to validate the criteria. There are three main questions I would ask to see if the solution is valid.

Mayana Leaves Essay

I. Introduction People of different cultures have long used plants, especially those with therapeutic values. They believe plants to have healing powers. In most parts of our country, many people have embraced the powers of plants in their daily lives. Modern medicine has downplayed the importance of this traditional knowledge, but now it has begun to acknowledge the value of using plants for medicinal purposes. Plants supply the phytochemicals of the healing system needed by the body. Phytochemicals are secondary metabolites that are scientifically known as the bioactive constituents with therapeutic activity. They are non-nutritive plant chemical that contain protective, disease-preventing compounds. Thorough screening and analysis of these medicinal plants may expose the bioactive components responsible for their healing capacities. This screening involves processes like extraction, purification and characterization of the active constituents of pharmaceutical importance. The Philippines takes pride of its rich natural resources and its flora offers an abundant source of medicinal plants. Production and utilization of local plants with phytochemical properties must be given vital importance since there is an immense chance that locally produced and less expensive drugs can be sourced from them. This may also pave the way for the discovery of novel compounds and locally made drugs that can compete in the global market. Mayana (coleus sp. ) is a traditional plant used to dress cuts and bruises, because of this, we have decided to do a phytochemical screening. The project hopes to find in mayana, value as a new tool in modern medicine at the very least, increase the general  knowledge about the plant. The extract will be made by preparing a solution of crushed plants in 80% ethyl alcohol. The leaf and stem extract were screened for the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids and anthraquinones. The assay was done by the paper disc method of assay. Different concentrations of the extract will be assayed against different kinds of bacteria. The screening showed that the stems contained considerable quantities of alkaloids. The results of the assay showed that tradition holds true in the laboratory as the leaf extract strongly showed signs of antibacterial activity. The reverse was true for the stems as they were found out to facilitate bacterial growth instead of impeding it. Future researches may include identification of the specific kind of flavonoids, alkaloids and quinones present on the plant and their specific effects. They may also try to utilize the bacterial activity of the stem to make a mayana stem-based nutrient agar. Objectives To identify the presence of certain phytochemical constituents present in Mayana To screen the major phytochemical constituents and evaluate antibacterial activity tests of leaf extracts of Mayana To determine the antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, cytotoxic, and phytochemical properties of ethanol extracts of leaves of Mayana II. Materials and Methods A. Folkloric Survey Before proceeding with our choice of plant, we did a survey to determine the plants that are used by an â€Å"albularyo† or quack doctor in treating his/her patients. A folkloric survey has been prepared by the researchers and the questions used were given by the professor. The folkloric survey prepared aims to determine the a) the plants that the albularyo still uses at present, b) the medicinal purposes of those plants stated by the albularyo, c) the part of the plant that is used by the albularyo and d) the proper method of using the plant medicinally and the recommended dosage. We searched for an albularyo in local/rural areas. The community that we chose is located in Bataan. B. Phytochemical Screening Plant Collection and Preparation We collected about 50 grams of mayana leaves from the local or rural area. We washed it with clean water and drained off the excess liquid. After, we air dried them for one week or until the leaves are brittle making sure that they are constantly aerated to prevent the accumulation of fungi on the leaves. After air drying, the leaves were cut into small pieces. The small pieces of leaves were soaked for two days into a 500 ml beaker containing 200 ml ethanol. Plant Extraction After 2 days of soaking the leaves, we extracted the leaves using filtration. We used a glass funnel with a filter paper that is placed on a tripod for easier use. A beaker was used to collect the extract. The leaves were filtered in the funnel with the filter paper. After filtration, we obtained the filtrate in the beaker. The first layer of the liquid was removed through decantation until the extract was obtained and ready for analysis. Identification of Plant Constituents by Thin Layer Chromatography The extract that we obtained through decantation was tested for the presence of phytochemicals using thing layer chromatography. A TLC plate was given to us which measures 2 cm x 7 cm. Using a pencil, we marked the TLC plate 1 cm from the top and 1 cm from the bottom. And then, we applied the plant samples in the bottom mark by blotting through the use of a capillary tube. The blot should be at least 2 mm in diameter but not more than 5 mm for it to climb up the TLC plate. After, we prepared solvent systems to determine the best solvent system for our plant extract. In the preparation of the solvent systems, we used hexane and ethyl acetate. There were 3 ratios used: 9:1, 7:3 and 6:4. Three TLC plates with the blotted plant extract were placed inside the developing chambers lined with filter paper and covered by a petri dish. The chambers were saturated first with 10 ml of the solvent using the 3 ratios to allow the solvent to move up the lining while covered before placing the blotted TLC plates. After, the  three TLC plates were placed inside the 3 developing chambers and it was kept covered until the solvent climbed up and reached the upper mark. At first, ours didn’t show any results and we did several tests. Finally, the blotted TLC plate in the 9:1 ratio traveled through the TLC. And in our test, the 9:1 ratio was the best solvent system for our sample. After obtaining the best solvent system to be used, we did another developing chamber with the 10 ml solvent. Just like what we did, we put the 9:1 ratio (10 ml solvent) in the beaker and lined it with filter paper to saturate the chamber. We were given two TLC plates, the other having three blots and the other having four blots, a total of seven blots. The TLC plates were placed in the developing chamber and waited for the solvent to reach the upper mark. There is a visible spotting or separation of the components in our TLC plates and then we proceeded with the spray reagent tests. The TLC plates were cut into seven pieces with the seven blots. Our professor assigned each group with a spray reagent. After doing the spray reagent tests, we obtained the results in our chromatograms. We obtained for positive results in: Phenols, Coumarins, Anthranoids, and Anthraquinones. The results were written in the data sheet provided. IV. Discussion of Results In the mayana leaves extraction, this was the leaves soaked in 200 ml ethanol. From this solution, we obtained the plant extract from the mayana leaves that we used for the phytochemical screening. In the second picture, the blotted TLC plates, this was done by using the capillary tubes to put the extract in the TLC plate. At the third picture, this shows the TLC plates in the developing chamber with the 10 ml solution which was 9 ml hexane and 1 ml ethanol. Lastly, after the spraying of reagents in the TLC plates, we obtained the results above. The positive results that we obtained are – Phenols, Coumarins, Anthranoids and Anthraquinones, respectively. According to our results, mayana plant had blue spots which indicate a positive result with phenols. Phenols have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties which is the same as the mayana plant. Phenols also have antiseptic and it may be present in minimal amount. It also gave a blue zone which tells us that it constitutes coumarins. This indicates that it can be used in wounds. It had yellow zone which shows positive result with anthranoids. Anthranoids can be taken when you have constipation which is the same property as mayana. Orange-violet color was obtained in mayana plant which indicates the presence of anthraquinones. Like phenols and  anthranoids, it can be used as anti-inflammatory and for constipation. Some scientists have demonstrated that some derivatives have activity in vitro against some parasitic species. V. Conclusion Coleus or mayana is a Southeast Asian plant that has brightly colored variated leaves that is popular as a house plant. On our phytochemical screening of this plant, we found out that it has positive results in coumarins which can be used in wounds, anthranoids which can be a treatment for constipation, phenols which can used as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant and lastly, anthraquinones which can also be used as anti-inflammatory and for constipation. This plant is also commonly used as an ornamental plant due to its purple foliage. Mayana can grow in different habitats. It is one of the traditionally used folklore medicine and it is primarily used for pain, sore, swelling and cuts and other instances as adjunct medication for delayed menstruation. A chemist from the University of the Philippines isolated sterols and triterpenes from leaves of mayana and it exhibited analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Another interesting component of the plant is its high rosmarinic acid content. This compound was noted for its biological activities; prominent of those are its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Lastly, we also found out that mayana has its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-protozoal and cytotoxic extracts of mayana. Therefore, mayana is a herbal medicine that you may use in wounds, headaches, fever and bruises just like what is said in the survey. VI. Free Essays on I Hate World Music

The article â€Å"I Hate World Music† is written by David Byrne, a prominent figure within the musical industry, and who is credited with playing a key role in shaping what we now know as popular music. The author begins the article by explaining what he believes we, as western society, perceive to be ‘world music’. According to the author, world music consists of any non-western music, and is treated with ambiguity and obscurity by consumers too afraid to explore an area of the musical world that may be new or unusual to them. He also claims the term refers to a bin in record stores for music that cannot be placed into a specific musical category. ‘World music’, the author points out, is an extremely vague term that fails to capture the incredible diversity of music that exists throughout the world outside of western pop culture. As an example we are told: â€Å"Albums by Selena, Ricky Martin and Los Del Rio, artists who sell millions of records in the United States alone, are racked next to field recordings of Thai hill tribes†. According to the definition supposedly used, ‘world music’ consists of the vast majority of music in the world, both in terms of production volume and the various types of music, as opposed to an obscure branch of miscellaneous sounds largely ignored by western consumers. To restrict your listening to English language pop is, according to the author, like deciding to eat the same meal for the rest of your life. This for me summarizes the overall underlying theme of the article, with the author making a strong and impassioned argument that we, as westerners, are allowing our ignorance and fear of the unknown to distort our attitudes towards any music that may convey cultural origins and values that differ in any way from our own. The author then goes on to discuss the myth of musical authenticity, claiming that western consumers still look for stereotypical features of national cultures to fee... Education In Canada New Opportunities For Students

Education In Canada New Opportunities For Students Education opportunities in Canada Not every country can be proud of its education system. Obviously, there are countries-leaders that can provide the excellent educational opportunities for students from around the world. Also, there are countries schooling system of which leaves much to be desired. Such countries as the United States of America, Great Britain, South Korea, Finland, Norway and Japan are in the top of the world’s educational systems ranking. However, there is one more country that can be definitely added to the list of the countries where you could go to in order to get a great education. It is Canada. Let’s have a look at what this country can offer in terms of education nowadays. Canadian education in PISA ranking In 1997 the Program for International Student Assessment was formed. Its abbreviation is PISA and it is a worldwide study aimed to compare education attainment around the world. The tests are held once in 3 years and are run by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). According to one of the recent international PISA tests and evaluations, Canada appeared in the top 10 in such subjects as mathematics, reading and science. Canada’s teenagers appeared to be among the best-educated students in the world, and, in particular, they ended up far ahead of their geographical neighbors (the USA) as well as some leading European countries. Also, according to the results of PISA tests, Canada has the world’s highest number of adults who work and who have a higher education (compared to other countries which took part in OECD testing). Equal rights policy Many students in Canada are originally born in families where both parents are from other countries. Nevertheless, due to the number of factors, children of newly-arrived families have no difficulty with integrating into the society. As a result, their academic achievements are impressive. Mainly, this happens because equity is what Canadians make an emphasis on. There is a strong dedication to fairness and equal treatment of any student, regardless of the child’s capabilities, color of skin or origin. In addition to this, one of the key factors is that teachers are well paid (as per international standards) and to become a teacher one needs to be a great professional. High academic performance of students is a natural result of this. Canada is welcoming international students The Canadian education policy was always aimed at providing equal chances to everyone. A great effort to offer a quality education by a well-trained staff was always a priority. Compared to many other countries, Canada was always very welcoming towards international students. Now, due to the recent events in the United States (policy of President Trump caused a decrease in the number of international students), the number of applications from overseas students reached record levels and, more than ever, Canada becomes a popular choice as a place to study. Canada has been always famous for its good quality of living and comparatively affordable education fees, so if you consider studying abroad, such country as Canada becomes a really viable choice.

Ashes by Edvard Munch and Abstractoin by Juan Gris Essay

Ashes by Edvard Munch and Abstractoin by Juan Gris - Essay Example The mural print is a depiction of a man and a woman in a forest that is dusky. The atmosphere in the picture is relatively gloomy filled with both hopelessness and despair. The trees and the existence of a man and a woman can be interpreted to be a form of a romantic adventure. However, the adventure may have been crippled by a misfortune. The woman has her hands on her red, long hair while standing at the center of the picture. The frowned face is filled with desolation and despair while the direction of her eyes is towards the audience (viewer). Apparently, she is regretting something. On the other hand, the man has his hand on his head while sitting on the left corner of the picture. The tone of his face is apparently not only sickly but also green. In fact, the man appears to be so hopeless that his pace can’t face the viewer. The dress that the woman has on her is white and it is half unbuttoned. Inside the white dress, one can glimpse at the red undergarment . The colors depicted in Munch’s work can be interpreted in several ways. According to my interpretation, white is used to represent innocence of the woman in question while the red one can be a symbol of either love or passion or even romance. As for black, which is normally associated with negativity, symbolizes either death or sorrow. The green painting on the man’s face expresses a disturbed state of the mind and a sad mood. Interestingly, a clear look at the picture using high definition quality glasses indicates that there is lack.

Questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 9

Questions - Essay Example If an artist is able to manage an analysis of bulk information, they are capable of inserting hugely valuable inclinations and breakthroughs. As a result, artists are able to actively secure their artworks in an appealing prospect for data security. Many artists certainly collect numerous bits of data with the usage of security gadgets. Their information can be secured through valuable inclinations and breakthroughs attached to their switches, internet connecting routers and data flow devices in an infinite manner (Vaidhyanathan 83). The first amendment and the right freedom of speech do not exist in absolute and unchallengeable senses. This is because reflection about liberation of speech on constitution day highlighted the protection of free speech by the first amendment (Vaidhyanathan 117). More precisely, free speech has been described as the communication conveyed into the market of concepts. These ideas have to have the authority to permit individuals on making decisions based on what is believed to be morally correct and incorrect. Therefore, I concur with the laws that forbid the criteria for harmful speech as referenced in the course book. The inherent dignity and equality of each person is the cornerstone axiom of global human rights. Global regulations restrict declarations that deny the fairness among all human beings. Hate speech laws form part of the regulations that go far enough in the criteria of hatred it is supposed to cover (Vaidhyanathan
